Most important survival items

The internet is full of websites and experts with recommended lists of survival gear necessities. Here’s a helpful tip, when you come upon a list, take time to consider the source. You want to look for lists composed by individuals with training and experience. Avoid lists that are too gimmicky and solely targeted to one catastrophic event. This is not to say your survival gear can’t address only one scenario, but to be fully prepared, your survival tools and equipment should be able to handle whatever life throws at you.

What are you survival strengths?

Trying to determine what you would need for each and every catastrophic scenario is to daunting and unnecessary task. Instead of matching the equipment to the problem, match yourself to the equipment. Ask yourself a few personal questions before purchasing any survival gear necessities.

What are your strengths? Think of your skills or talents and how they could be utilized to keep yourself alive. Maybe your skills are hunting and cooking, or creating and building. Find tools that work to your strengths. You can buy pre-packaged survival kits but it won't do you any good if you're not familiar with how everything works. Instead look for kits with equipment that you’re comfortable using.

What are your survival weaknesses?

What are your weaknesses? Maybe you don’t know how to build a temporary shelter or know what berries are toxic. Any unknown information can be learned or books could be packed within your kit. In addition, consider those weaknesses that can’t be learned. Maybe you have a medical condition or allergy. You’ll want to make sure to put any necessary medications along side your first aid kit when gathering your survival gear necessities.

Do you know where to go in an emergency?

Environments, and logistics. Consider where you live or where you might have to go during a crisis. What’s the environment like there? If it’s somewhere up north you might want extra warm blankets in your kit. If you’re on a coast line maybe packing a fishing net would be helpful. The world around you can work against you or with you. Take time to prepare for any environmental challenges.

What survival supplies do you need?

Do your research. Your survival gear necessities are designed help keep you alive. This is the quintessential time to do your due diligence. Look at the descriptions on each product you're considering for your kit. Look into what other people are saying about the products. Cross and compare while always keeping in mind the above suggestions.

Practice makes perfect. This especially applies to products that are new to you. Get more than one and test them out. This way you can work out any kinks and make sure you're confident with how the product works. The middle of a crisis is not the time for trial and error.

Every ounce counts. When trying to decide what should or should not be apart of your survival gear necessities consider how much is weighs. Can it all fit in one bag? Could you easily carry it a long distance if need be? Maybe a multi-purpose tool will help cut weight in your survival kit.

Hopefully these suggestions put you in the right mentality to assemble your survival gear necessities. We can not control the world around us, but we can be confidently prepared.
